The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in detail

Personal Social and Emotional Development  involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities. Our setting encourages positive relationships through consistent approaches and staff develop close bonds with the children to ensure they settle confidently into the group...

Communication and Language Development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Riverside staff are experienced in communicating with children in ways to suit their individual needs and have attended appropriate training, including signs and symbols 'Makaton'...

Physical Development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their coordination, control and movement. Children must be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food. Children at Riverside have daily access to activities which promote action, balance and coordination alongside regular 'Wright Dance' sessions, broadening their physical skills, health and well being. Our refreshments always consist of healthy snacks, often picked from our garden's choice of fruits and vegetables, which the children plant and tend...

Literacy involves pre-reading and pre-writing skills, alphabet and phonics which are introduced through children being giving access to a wide range of reading materials ( stories, poems, rhymes and other reading materials) to ignite their interest. Children at Riverside also explore Phase 1 of 'Letters and Sounds' using 'Jolly Phonics' resources, in preparation for literacy learning at school. Books and varying forms of literature are included into every activity area and our children join a book share scheme; loaning setting books to take home and share with their family and friends...

Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, space and measures. Mathematics is embedded into every area and activity at Riverside, where children learn through enjoyable, fun experiences both indoors and outside. Examples include, tills at a role play, making playdough for themselves and their friends following recipes to measure ingredients, or counting aloud when jumping on the trampoline...

Understanding the world  involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe, and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. Children at Riverside have an outdoor space which caters for exploring the natural world and regularly go on sensory investigation walks to promote development in this area. They also have access to modern technologies including laptops and touch screen tablets loaded with software appropriate to learning through the EYFS...

Expressive Arts and Design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology. Our setting plans for several activities to promote this area of learning daily and our children have access to self choosing resources at all times to encourage their individual creativity...
